Project/DANCE

Students learning from Mr Tony.

Since 2022, NAB has collaborated with Partners in Island Education (P.I.E) to bring dance to the kids and residents of Vinalhaven, ME. Each Summer, NAB travels to the island off the coast of Rockland, ME to host the annual Dance/SCAMP, introducing island kids, ages 5-12 to various styles of dance, including ballet, hip-hop, contemporary, musical theater, and improv.

The culmination of the week-long camp is Project/DANCE, the unique and exciting opportunity for the children to work together to create their very own dance to be performed for islanders at the Smith Hokanson Memorial Hall located in the Vinalhaven School. Each day they work with professional dancers of the company to write their original story, create movement to tell the story, assign roles & outfit themselves with costumes.

The products of the wildly popular Project/DANCE are often silly, but 100% the students’ creation. As an added bonus, the camp students, and all residents of Vinalhaven, get to see excerpts of ballets from NAB’s current season in a free performance by the company & their teachers for the week. The event concluded with a Q&A with the professionals.
